There's a unique charm to riding a classic bike—a sense of nostalgia, simplicity, and connection with the road that modern machines often lack. My recent journey to Olongapo City in Zambales, Philippines, on my Rusi Classic 250i was a testament to this timeless allure. This trip, filled with scenic vistas, quaint stops, and the ever-present hum of my bike's engine, was an unforgettable adventure through one of Luzon's most picturesque regions.

Preparing for the Ride

Before embarking on this journey, I made sure my classic bike was in top condition. Classic bikes, while beautiful and characterful, require a bit more TLC than their modern counterparts. I checked the engine, brakes, tires, and lights, ensuring everything was running smoothly. With my gear packed—helmet, gloves, jacket, and a small toolkit—I was ready for the road.

Setting Off: Manila to Olongapo City

The ride from Manila to Olongapo City spans approximately 150 kilometers, a route that offers a delightful mix of urban landscapes and rural scenery. I started early in the morning to avoid the bustling city traffic. As I rolled out of Manila, the urban chaos gradually gave way to the more serene and scenic Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTEx).

The SCTEx Experience

The SCTEx is a rider’s dream—long stretches of smooth highway with minimal traffic and stunning views of rolling hills and expansive fields. On a classic bike, the ride becomes even more immersive. The absence of modern noise-dampening technology means you can hear every purr of the engine and feel every bump and curve in the road. It's a visceral experience, connecting you to the journey in a way few other modes of transport can.

A Scenic Detour: Dinalupihan to Olongapo

Rather than taking the direct route, I opted for a scenic detour through Dinalupihan. This route, though a bit longer, offers a glimpse into the rural heartland of Zambales. The narrow roads wind through small towns and verdant fields, with the distant Zambales mountain range providing a dramatic backdrop. The air here is fresher, the pace slower, and the people friendlier—a perfect setting for a classic bike adventure.

Arrival in Olongapo City

Arriving in Olongapo City, I was greeted by the vibrant coastal vibe of this bustling city. Known for its rich history and the Subic Bay Freeport Zone, Olongapo offers a mix of cultural experiences and modern attractions. I rode along the waterfront, the sea breeze a refreshing change after hours on the road.

Exploring Olongapo on Two Wheels

One of the highlights of Olongapo City is the Subic Bay area, where remnants of its past as a US naval base coexist with modern developments. The boardwalk along the bay is perfect for a leisurely ride, with scenic views of the ocean and various dining options. I parked my bike near the boardwalk and took a stroll, enjoying a cold drink while soaking in the maritime atmosphere.

For lunch, I visited one of the local seafood restaurants, indulging in freshly caught fish and prawns. The flavors were a delightful reward after the long ride. Post-lunch, I explored more of the city, visiting the Olongapo City Museum and the nearby Zoobic Safari.

The Return Journey

As the sun began to set, I started my journey back to Manila. Riding a classic bike at dusk is a magical experience—the cooling air, the golden light, and the sense of accomplishment from a day well spent. The return trip was leisurely, with a few stops to capture the beautiful sunset over the fields.

Reflections on the Ride

This journey to Olongapo City on a classic bike was more than just a road trip; it was a step back in time, a reconnection with the pure joy of riding. Classic bikes remind us that sometimes, the journey itself is the destination. The blend of mechanical simplicity and road-borne adventure makes for a uniquely satisfying experience.

For anyone considering a similar trip, I highly recommend it. Ensure your bike is well-maintained, plan your route to include scenic detours, and take your time to enjoy the journey. Olongapo City, with its mix of natural beauty and rich history, is the perfect destination for a classic bike adventure.
